Like mother like daughter.

Some may argue that participating children look happy while performing so leave them be.
For many cases, this is a sad lifestyle that is forced upon the child and what we see isn't always what we get, we sometimes forget that we aren't always shown behind the scenes and it is usually here where most of the problems arise. What you see is adorable little girls wearing cute outfits, but what is hidden from the public eye is the gruelling hours of preparation, the days spent perfecting a performance instead of playing outside with friends. It is this view that is generally lost to most.

Many participating girls appear to be too young to say no, and even when some girls do express their want to not participate, their parents hush them up and force it upon them anyway, an example of this is shown in the video below: (The week staff, 2012).

  1. I think you have produced a great blog. Like you I have no personal experience with beauty pageants, nor do I have any knowledge on the topic. When I think of beauty pageants I think ‘American’ and it seems like the topic is not very well known within New Zealand. In saying this I have heard of toddlers in tiaras and more specifically Honey Boo-Boo but I have never watched the show aside from the short clips you have provided in your blog. Something I did notice was that you haven’t actually incorporated your hyper-links into your blog. Instead of having them all within your sources it could be useful for you to arrange them where appropriate within your posts. This might make it easier for readers to link your evidence to their original sources.

  2. Elsie I think that your blog is very interesting and topical. I appreciate how you have taken a strong opposition to a subject like this. Your inclusion of video's and interesting imagery makes your blog an effective and enticing spectacle. Personally I do not hold a strong opinion on 'child beauty pageants' but many of my ideas have now been influenced by your blog. I like how your blog is at times informal as it presents a uniquely personal touch. I agree with Natasha, that the inclusion of hyperlinks would add another dimension to your blog. I also think that perhaps a few more statistical facts could work well. Thank-you for focusing on a controversial topic.

  3. Great points in this post, however you've used a few too many rhetorical questions without answers. I think you need to answer some of these questions in the post itself and not just leave it up to the video. Perhaps you could state your understanding of what is shown in the video, and not just leave it up to the reader's interpretation. You could also give some more examples and links in this post.

  5. I really love the imagery you have used, especially the image of honey boo boo and her mother since they have been on the media quite frequently lately! Agreeing with Kelly, I do like how you have added your own personal touch to the blog, many of your own opinions. I don't know if its my computer but I am unable to see the video for some reason?
